How to Stop Overthinking: Calm Your Mind and Find Inner Peace

Hypnotherapy for Overthinking, Anxiety and Stress | Jo Barnett

Do you ever find yourself lying in bed replaying conversations, worrying about the future or analysing things that happened days ago?

Perhaps your mind never seems to switch off. You worry about what other people think, question your decisions or find yourself imagining worst-case scenarios.

You're not alone.

Overthinking can be mentally exhausting. It can affect your sleep, confidence, relationships and ability to enjoy the present moment.

But what if you could learn to quieten that constant mental chatter and feel more in control of your thoughts?

Why do we overthink everything?

Overthinking is often linked to anxiety, fear, perfectionism and a need to feel in control.

Sometimes our minds develop patterns of thinking that keep us stuck in a cycle of worry.

You might:

Constantly replay conversations in your head.

Worry about things that haven't happened.

Struggle to make even simple decisions.

Seek reassurance from other people.

Feel mentally exhausted but unable to relax.

Find it difficult to switch off at bedtime.

Often, these patterns are connected to deeper beliefs about ourselves, our experiences and our need to feel safe.

The good news is that thinking patterns can change.

5 ways to start calming an overactive mind

1. Recognise when your thoughts are taking over

The first step is noticing when you're overthinking rather than automatically believing every thought that enters your mind.

Ask yourself: Is this something I know to be true, or is it something I'm worrying might happen?

2. Stop trying to control everything

Sometimes anxiety comes from wanting certainty in an uncertain world.

Learning to accept that you cannot control every outcome can be incredibly freeing.

3. Bring yourself back to the present

Try slowing your breathing, relaxing your shoulders and noticing what's happening around you.

Even a few minutes of mindful breathing can help create a sense of calm.

4. Challenge negative beliefs

Are you constantly telling yourself you're not good enough, that something will go wrong or that you need to get everything right?

Learning to recognise and challenge these beliefs can help you develop a healthier relationship with your thoughts.

5. Give your mind permission to rest

You don't have to solve every problem today.

Create space for activities that help you relax, whether that's walking, meditation, exercise or simply taking time away from your phone.

How can hypnotherapy help with overthinking?

Hypnotherapy can be a useful approach for people who struggle with anxiety, persistent worry and unhelpful thinking patterns.

During hypnotherapy, you are guided into a relaxed, focused state where you can work on your thoughts, beliefs and emotional responses.

At Jo Barnett Hypnotherapy & Coaching, I combine CBT-informed techniques, hypnotherapy and coaching to help you explore what's driving your patterns and develop healthier ways of responding.

Rather than simply looking at the symptoms, we explore what's happening beneath the surface.

Everyone is different, so sessions are tailored to your individual needs and goals.

You deserve to feel calm, confident and in control

Imagine waking up without that familiar feeling of worry.

Being able to make decisions without questioning yourself constantly.

Feeling more comfortable in your own skin, sleeping more peacefully and enjoying life without your mind always being somewhere else.

You don't have to live in a constant state of overthinking.

Change starts with understanding yourself and learning new ways to respond.
